Slides re: Jisc Tile Painpoint landscape June 2008

Slides from talk by Ken Chad 18 June 2008 on the JISC TILE project.

TILE: Making libraries work

How can we make resource discovery and evaluation in more effective? Using clickstreams and other user ‘context’ information (e.g. profiles) are an integral part of many services on the web—not least our old friends Google and Amazon. User contributions in the form of tagging, reviews, ratings etc are commonplace. Such features have clear utility it seems: so why isn’t there much wider adoption in HE, in particular where a student’s context (course, module, year) is comparatively well defined? Isn’t there a clear case for recommender services for example? How might we best make use of the data we already have (in library, registry and VLE systems for example). What kind of ‘architecture of participation’ do we need to make best use of user generated content? The UK’s JISC and SCONUL believe there is real opportunity in working together with a wide variety of stakeholders in the domain (including libraries and software vendors) to make progress. The TILE project is a result.

Sara:

Hi Matt, how's it all going, just signed in, not sure what I'm doing or where the best place to be is, any advice? Would like to say hi to a few people if they are around.

Tony Stubblebine:

Matt, re-added "who's attending" to the session pages along with a new feature. The session pages now list the people you have on your to-meet list. Hopefully that makes it easier to find people before or after a session.

Owen Stephens:

Would be great to have more links between the virtual and physical sides of the conference. Specific example is that I've just had a mutual 'would like to meet' request, and Crowdvine says:

"Say hello in the hallway or send a note back to setup something more formal"

This is OK as far as it goes, but what about suggesting some meetings places and times? I don't know the venue at all, so I can't suggest where I might meet this new contact. I'm not sure how detailed this needs to be, but at least some 'suggested meeting places' would be good, and also some times might be good as well - something like 'you are both attending the xxx session' (since it doesn't seem possible to share schedules?)

Owen Stephens:

Do you mind Crowdvine enhancement suggestions being posted here?

Anyway, would be nice to include 'Friend' and 'Like to meet' links in the New Members RSS feed if it was possible.

Owen Stephens:

I'd second Nic's comment - or suggest that a nice enhancement would be for Crowdvine to support some 'scheduling' process following a mutual 'would like to meet' network request

Nic Wilkinson:

Matt, is there any chance of you adding elements like the demo's and stands to the my shedule bit. Mainly because I want to encourage everyone to come and see my demo!

James Clay:

Where's the best place to reply to a comment on my space, here or on mine?

Amy Butterworth:

Aw, what a winning a smile!

Matt Jukes:

There are a couple of bugs in the mySchedule option at the moment - the opening keynote is not entered correctly (the details are under Intro by Sir Ron) and the Stuedent Experience session is missing..these will be fixed as soon as possible..

Matt Jukes:

The mySchedule option is now up and running and looks really good - there is also a 'want to meet' feature now to help networking..

Robert Haymon-Collins :

Not all my areas of interest (ie my 'answsers' bits on myprofile, show up on my profile home page - any ideas?

Robert Haymon-Collins :

BTW the link (..../contactus/...) on your profile doesn't work

Robert Haymon-Collins :

Right, done that, all very cool - now what?
